California Writing Standards Tests
Scoring Rubric for Grade 4 Narratives

The following four-point holistic rubric will be used to score the Grade 4 Writing
Standards Tests. The rubric includes general criteria related to writing strategies and
conventions, as well as specific criteria for the narrative genre.

4 The writing
1. clearly addresses all parts of the writing task
2. demonstrates a clear understanding of purpose
3. maintains a consistent point of view, focus, and organizational structure, including paragraphing
when appropriate
4.includes a clearly presented central idea with relevant facts, details, and/or explanations
5.includes a variety of sentence types
6.
contains few, if any, errors in the conventions of the English language (grammar, punctuation,
capitalization, spelling).These errors do not interfere with the reader’s understanding of the writing.
7. provides a thoroughly developed sequence of significant events to relate ideas, observations,
and/or memories
8. includes vivid descriptive language and sensory details that enable the reader to visualize
the events or experiences

3 The writing

capitalization, spelling). These errors do not interfere with the reader’s understanding of the writing.
7. provides an adequately developed sequence of significant events to relate ideas, observations,
and/or memories
8. includes some descriptive language and sensory details that enable the reader to visualize
the events or experiences

capitalization, spelling). These errors may interfere with the reader’s understanding of the writing.
7. provides a minimally developed sequence of events to relate ideas, observations, and/or memories
8. includes limited descriptive language and sensory details that enable the reader to visualize
the events or experiences

8. lacks descriptive language and sensory details that enable the reader to visualize the events or experiences
