Parts of the Bay Tree

The bay tree fruit is ripe when it is yellow. When it is not ripe, it is a greenish brownish. You can cook the seeds by roasting them and then you can eat them. The bay tree's fruit is big and delicious! - Madeline Galiani

If you eat fancy food, you might surprisingly find something that smells like bay tree leaves. It will be because people use bay tree leaves and nuts for spices. The leaves have a very strong smell and taste, I would think. The seeds can be roasted, cracked open and eaten. Or they can be cracked open and molded into biscuits. The fresh seeds store away very well for future use. The Romans used the bay tree branches as a peace symbol like the Olive trees. The leaves of a bay tree are very useful. - Natalie Samuel

The bay tree's bark can be chopped down and made into wood. It's very expensive, and I'm not really surprised because it's very fine wood. The color is reddish, brownish, blackish. The bark is very bumpy. The bark is excellent. - Regan Bradshaw

The bay tree in our yard has seats! Really, they're big crevices that people sit in. The seats usually have smaller crevices that act like footrests to the people that sit in the seats. Lots of moss grows on the tree. The seats, amazingly enough, almost always seem to be changing throughout the seasons. For example, the moss tends to almost shrivel away very slowly in the winter and vigorously grows back in mid-spring. The seats also allow us to play make-believe games like king and queen. You can play by having one person be king or queen and sit in the biggest crevice and other people can be princesses, princes, royal pet, anything! So, as you can obviously see, the bay tree seats are incredibly fascinating. - Claire Hodgdon
