Our Garden

by Georgia Turzynski

A peek inside our gardenIn previous years Dixie allocated a garden box to each of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classes. As of September 2001 the garden has been a communal effort. Each class is able to work and harvest the whole garden. In this way we are able to grow more and whole classes are able to undertake jobs that were too small in one box. We are introducing themes into the garden, such as a herb box, a pizza garden, a healing garden and whole boxes of lettuces and tomatoes so we can all enjoy some great salads this summer.

We are also aware that the garden is a valuable learning environment and that to maximize that learning experience, within a short lesson period, we need to remove the onus of maintaining the garden from the teachers. As such we are asking parents, friends and relatives to come and help maintain the garden whenever they can. A list of jobs to be done is posted in the garden shed. When you have a spare moment, come to the garden for however long you can. After you have finished a job, or part of, initial the jobs' list so the next person knows what has been done and when.

If you would like to hang out in the garden please call me Georgia Turzynski on 507-0591 so I can keep a list of all our helpers.
