October
Harvesting
is the main theme this month. A list of what is ready to harvest
is in the garden shed.
Weeding
the boxes and around the boxes is always needed as is watering
the morning glory in the box near the gate.
Any
weeds need to go on the compost pile. If you are wanting to
make some compost in the right hand stall please add some straw,
compost and water to your weeds. Compost is in the shed and
the straw is in a black plastic bag beside the shed.
November
The
irrigation will be turned off in November so please harvest
everything left in the boxes.
Now
is a good time to make the compost we will need for spring planting.
This is a very simple process and instructions can be found
in the garden shed. The compost pile is also a great habitat
for insects, which you can study while you turn the material.
Weeding
in and around the boxes is always a must so please help in the
garden whenever you have a free moment.
December
Boxes
still need to be cleared and the soil turned. Please replant
any herbs into the box near the gate and strawberries into the
box near the shed. These two boxes will not need to be replanted
every season.
The compost needs to be turned so we have a good supply for
our spring planting. Instructions are in the shed.
The
Morning Glory, herbs and strawberries will need to be watered
if the rain stops.

January
Now
is the time to make compost. We will need a lot of new soil
in the boxes this spring ready for planting. Instructions are
in the shed. Making compost is very simple and students enjoy
finding insects in the pile when you turn it.
The
soil in each box needs to be turned over to aerate it. Please
leave all the worms as they help break down the soil that the
plants find easier to grow in. How many worms can you find in
each box?
February
The
end of this month will be a good time to start planting seeds
indoors. Seed starter soil will be in the garden shed. Don't
forget to put a thin layer of soil over the seeds and cover
with the lid to create a warm green house effect.
The
soil in the boxes needs to be turned and replenished with new
compost. Remember the garden is open to everyone, so you can
work on any box.
The
soil is soft and ideal to plant bulbs in for spring. Feel free
to plant in the herb and strawberry boxes.
A
plan of the teachers' planting ideas for the boxes is now in
the office and garden shed. Each class will undertake the planting
but the general upkeep and harvesting will be communal.
We
are starting a garden club on Wednesday February 13th at lunchtime.
We hope this will be a weekly event. Come and have fun and meet
in the garden!
