History of the
Dixie School
Nature Trail
To
celebrate Earth Day 2001, the Dixie School Nature Trail project was
launched. The trail encompasses 22 sites of interest around the school
campus. Each class has chosen a site and documents its discoveries
in classwork, some of which is exhibited on this website.
The
aim of the Nature Trail is to make students more aware and to encourage
them to take responsibility for their surroundings.
Each
class studies its site at least once each season, taking pictures,
making observations, doing research, and perhaps creating art and
literature inspired by the site and season. The Dixie Arts Council
collaborated on this project with the third grade students to produce
natural art forms inspired by the works of Andy Goldsworthy. We hope
this collaboration will continue with other grade levels.
Each
class has been given a binder in which to collect their findings and
creative works. On Earth Day 2002 the Nature Trail website was established
as a repository for educational and inspiration material about our
Nature Trail and the ecologic treasures of our local environment.
This facilitates access to information by students, teachers, parents
and anyone else who may decide to undertake a Nature Trail project
at their school.
