About Wisteria

Liquidambar styraciflua

Our class has gathered some facts about Wisteria. This is what we have learned:

There are two kinds of Wisteria: Japanese Wisteria and Chinese Wisteria. Both are native to China and North America. Japanese Wisteria grows to 25 feet tall and its blooms are 12 to 18 inches long. Chinese Wisteria is bigger and grows to more than 25 feet. Its blooms are 6 to 12 inches long. We think our Wisteria is Chinese Wisteria. Our blooms were about 7 to 8 inches long.

We also found out that Wisteria does not make flowers right away. It can take up to 15 years before it blooms.

Wisteria grows really fast and needs a sturdy trellis to grow on.

We observed our Wisteria during the school year. This is what some of us recorded in our Journals:

9/28/01
It is all leaves. The leaves feel like paper.

2/8/02
The difference is the Wisteria has buds. A pod is on the Wisteria. It is fuzzy. The Wisteria curls around itself. It has no leaves. The Wisteria is pretty hard.

3/29/02
The last time we visited our Wisteria, it was plain. This time it has flowers and buds.
It has changed by the purple flowers that were buds before. The buds have turned a lot bigger. Before the Wisteria had little buds and no flowers. It didn't turn out the way I thought..
