The video above is a short part of the forty-minute digital video that the students in Ms. Rechtfertig's class made in 2002. They began by researching four California Indian groups (the Hupa, Chumash, Mojave, and Yokut.) Then the students worked in teams to think up their own "interview" questions. Six kids became "moderators" who conducted the interviews, while their classmates assumed the roles of Native Californians. The kids painted backdrops and prepared a "movie set" in the alcove of the classroom. We used the school's digital camcorder and iMovie to create the movie, and then transferred it to VHS. After it was duplicated, the movie was ready for the kids to take home, and Ms. Rechtfertig will use it to help her students learn about Indians next year.
