Matthew's Writing Contest
by Matthew Puccini
The Art of Writing
Writing has been a vital instrument to the survival of humans for hundreds upon thousands of years. For example, the Egyptians used a thin, scaly plant called papyrus as their paper, and used a system of symbols called hieroglyphics. In Greece, they worshipped many gods, goddesses and deities, including Athena, the goddess of wisdom, which includes writing. However, although Athena was a woman, woman were forbidden to write in any way. Along the line to the pesent year, many important events have been kept alive by pen and paper. Many civilizations' mysteries have unfolded because of this ancient source.
Close your eyes. Imagine thousands of years into the future. Imagine a group of men, archeologists, digging in the ground. They find a typed paper, dated 2004. Truly, writing lasts forever. Now, you can experience the magic of writing and see it for what it truly is: not a piece of paper, but a miracle.
Rules
- This is a contest to test your skill as a writer, not to win. Do not feel discouraged if you do no win, for that is why there are second chances. Try again! You may find yourself with a first place ribbon around your neck.
- Cheating is strictly prohibited. The writing, whatever you choose, must come GENUINELY from your heart, not fromn the beginning of a best-seller novel.
- There are four categories in which you can write:Poetry, Narrative, Persuasive, and Response to Literature. There are also age categories:Kindergarten-2nd grade, 3rd grade to 5th grade, 6th grade to 8th grade, and highschool and above.
- There is no limit to how much you write, but for Persuasions, there is a suggested guideline, as shown further on. Poetry can take the form of a cinquain or haiku, also shown later, but can also be without form. A poem does NOT have to rhyme!
- The last and most important rule! YOU MUST HAVE FUN!!!
