To facilitate full academic achievement for all students, each school participates in the DSD’s Academic Intervention Program. When a student is at academic risk, the teacher will recommend to the parent that the child participate in the school’s Academic Intervention Program. Each school has a plan. The school staff determines its Intervention Program based on the needs of its students. The program is held after regular school hours. This program begins at the start of the second report card period. Students participating in the Academic Intervention program will focus their studies on Math and/or Language Arts. Parents are responsible for after school transportation needs.

Summer School is also an academic intervention program. Students should participate in Summer School when they have not met the Promotion Criteria by the end of the school year. Promotion Criteria must be met before promotion is granted.

ACADEMIC INTERVENTION FIRST!

The Dixie School District (DSD) has a policy regarding the promotion or retention of individual students in grades 2 through 8. Our policy reflects the State’s mandate to end the social promotion of students. It is our intention and objective that all students at each grade level acquire the needed academic skills prior to being promoted to the next grade level.

We assure parents that we intend to bring additional resources to bear when a child falls behind in academic achievement. To this end, the DSD supports an Academic Intervention Program. Parent involvement and support, in this effort, is a critical resource as we assist students to develop and acquire needed academic skills.

PROMOTION

In grades 2 through 8, student promotion from one grade level to the next is determined by multiple measures in three areas referred to as "Promotion Criteria." There are three Promotion Criteria. The Promotion Criteria are defined, and progress toward achievement is noted on each report card in grades 2 through 5. They may be a topic of discussion during parent conferences. The 3 criteria are:

Stanford Achievement Test Score (STAR Program): Total Math and total Reading and/or total Language score is 25% National Percentile Rank or higher.

Grades (Letter grades on report card): Math and Reading grade of "Passing" or "D" or higher for 2 of the last 3 reporting periods.

Math and Language Arts Standards/ Benchmarks (district adopted and tracked on the report cards, grades 2-5): Meets defined grade level standards.

RETENTION

When a student’s performance does not meet grade level Promotion Criteria that student is considered to be at academic risk of promotion. When grade level Promotion Criteria are not met by the end of the school year, the student will be recommended for retention at the current grade level rather than promotion to the next grade level.

PARENT NOTIFICATION

When a student is at risk of not meeting the Promotion Criteria, the parents will be notified of the situation. Notification is made in one of several ways, which include, parent/teacher conferences, progress reports, report cards, and student study team meetings
